East End Hockey
Association was formed during the fall of 1993 after Mr. Bob McCall,
known affectionately as "Cement Block Bob", started playing hockey with
his children on various courts around town in the spring of 1992. Word
spread quickly of this local hockey guru and before he knew it Bob had
25 children or more looking for a place to play every weekend. At the
same time, the roller hockey bug started biting a group of men. Looking
for a place to play, the hockey players went to the only courts
available, basketball and tennis. Soon the conflicts between various
user groups: tennis, basketball and hockey, began to grow. Without a
bonafide hockey rink, the hockey players, who were growing in numbers,
were left without a place to play.
East
End Hockey Association formed to petition and negotiate with the Town
of East Hampton to build a hockey rink for the children to play, on as
well as to organize the group into a league. Many thanks to Supervisor
Tony Bullock and the Town Board, who not only built one rink for the
children, but another rink for the adults.
The
original youth rink, located in the newly constructed Youth Park, was a square, wire fence rink which had 2x12
boards. The league started play and the number of players grew very
rapidly. With the large demand for a this sport, soon the youth rink
was re-constructed into a real hockey rink 65 ft x 145 ft including dasher boards, players benches and a score clock. The popularity of this new sport soon prompted the Town
to constructed a larger rink on the east side of Abrahams Path for the for the bigger kids sometimes referred to as adults.
Membership rose quickly but disappointment soon shadowed success when the membership encountered a full season of rained out games. Mom's and Dad's, kids and coaches, with leaf blowers, brooms, mops and squeegies could not abait the forces of mother nature and almost a full year of games were lost. This prompted the Association membership, kids, moms, dads, grandmoms and granddads, to petition the town for a roof over the rink to hold off the elements. This grass roots campaign effectively swayed to Town Board to construct such a roof over the east rink. That decision soon lead to addition of walls to the project along with a new, "state of the art" playing surface. The long partnership between East End Hockey and the town of East Hampton lead to an agreement between the Association's parent corporation, East
End Ice, and the town. It was agreed the not-for-profit organization would manage the facility, saving the town the costs of additional overhead, while serving the community and ensuring access to evermore users at a minimal cost to the residents. The people of the Town of
East Hampton owe a special thanks to the entire Town Board for this
fabulous facility where all are welcome.
East
End Hockey Association is open for all to join. Sponsorships are
available to off set costs for those needing assistance. The league is
a non-competitive, non-checking league emphasizing fun, team play, exercise
and sportsmanship.
